Help! Alternator or voltage regulator?
2002 Excursion 7.3, Getting 12 volts at fast idle 1100 rpm no load. 8 volts under full load. Gages and radio etc cutting in and out. My question is, is there a voltage regulator i should check first or should i start with the alternator ? Not sure if there is even a voltage regulator what should I check/test first, New to me truck in Nov this year so not to sure how old the alternator is.

You'll be way ahead in the long run, the guy that repaired mine said it was nothing special. Gave it to him at noon one day & picked it up the next morning.

Wow...I hope the guy that gave you the quote gave you a kiss, as in foreplay because he sure was trying to get to the good part.

I have never had any luck with the re builder here, he quoted me $200 to rebuild my convertible pump I said there only $199 new. Parts Source here in Canada was $180 after tax and core and it was a 110 Amp Motorcraft. Its all fixed and running again and a very easy job luckily as it was -34C here today. Its funny at first I thought it was electrical gremlins as the truck was still running fine other then electrical. Then I remembered Diesels don't have spark plugs lol. I checked the voltage using Torque for android and had 10 volts with all the accessory's off and figured it was safe to limp home.
Question though for future incidents does the HPOP use power ? and if it does then i guess it would be bad to drive home with no power?

Just because it doesn't have sparkplugs doesn't mean it can run without power. PCM, IDM, Sensors, fuel pump aren't going to work without power.
