Ford 6.0 vs Ford 6.4 problems?

I just did the same "Trade up". I definitely like the 2008 job 1 over the 2004, but mileage SUCKS. I checked the oasis report to verify that the radiator was replaced and the tee was installed. I would check to make sure that the known common issues have already been addressed, or that it is still under warranty. I bought mine with 75,000 miles, but I will definitely still get the 7/200,000 Ford Diesel Enginecare warranty, as I cannot afford the types of financial surprises the 6.0 brought in repairs. I believe it is a better/stronger motor, but it is still HIGH maintenance.

Yes, had both, still have the '08 6.4. Bought the 6.4L used with 77K miles an Oasis was clean, since then the turbo went out and there was a coolant leak, now at 84K.
Our '05 6.0L had all the classic problems and was traded with under 70K miles a few months before the 5/10K was up. Only thing I liked better about it was the mileage and no regens.
Unfortunately even with this 6.4L I feel the 2/100K Ford warranty is going to be mandatory. As much as I just want to cut the DPF off and tune it I think keeping it stock and getting the warranty is the better way to go.
In your case I'd run the numbers on what the extended warranty will cost you on the 6.0L vs. trading up into a 6.4L with more left on the warranty. Mileage on the 6.4L seems to be 3-5mpg worse than the 6.0L and the trucks are identical body and option wise.

Just read the TSB's (technical service bullitins) for the 6.0 (I quit reading after I got to 100) and then do the same for the 6.4. Then think about whether you want to lift the cab yourself on the 6.4 after the warranty runs out. Or, would you rather find a good used V-10 with no TSB's and much less maintenance issues, but your mileage will be less. What would you rather have; more power, more trouble but better mileage or a little less power, less trouble, and a little less mileage. Reliability vs power, you pick.

I bought one of the first 2008 6.4L F-250 4x4 in February 2007, best truck I ever owned.
Tow a 37ft fifthwheel Montana 3400Rl 12,800 LB with no problems, this truck is a real work horse. Did not buy it for the fuel mileage, get 12 when towing and 19 when empty running at 75 mph interstate. Tuned with superchips cortex and 50 gal transflow tank for total fuel load 80 gal.

Can you spell "regen"?? Guess what a regen canister costs to replace?? Would you believe $1500? The 6.4 might run good, certainly better than the 6.0, but the maintenence issues along with the cab lift made for too many negatives for me. I went with the V-10 and couldn't be happier. Those folks that love their diesels, I am glad for you and wish you the best of luck with them.

I had an 03 6.oh that I bought new and ran for 230000 kms. My 6.4 has 85000 kms. The 6.4 is far superior and in a totally different league!!!!!!!!
With DPF it is a pig on fuel, but...
Find a mod friendly dealer, get a programmer with some mild tunes(do your homework, as all are not created equal), do a DPF delete, and have the best of everything - gobs of power, great mileage, and did I mention - lots of power and great mileage???
If you are going to run a 6.4 with DPF intact, the case for a V10 sounds very convincing though - the posters above are right on the money. The 'emissions complexity' of all brands of new diesels almost negate any benefit of owning one...

If you have a "friendly dealer" and add a mod or two, that's fine but the Ford factory team is well aware of the programmer industry and if they find out you messed with the stock setup, then you are really behind the 8 ball, not to mention a bunch of money. I had a 2002 7.3 and loved it, but these new diesels are just too much trouble and money to justify it for me. Between the added cost of diesel fuel (have you seen it go up in a week to .75 cents over gasoline?) Expect $5.00 diesel real soon. No thanks-

I do have the 6.4. Solid motor, takes a little getting used to with the emissions but once you understand it there will not be any problems.
The 6.4 is a hwy/towing motor. You need to figure out how you would use the truck before buying this motor. That is what I did. Not a city truck. You can drive in the city and low speeds but eventually you will have problems unless you open it up.
As far as cab off stuff....you can do just about everything with the cab on. Cab off is the preferred method and is faster but if you don't have the facility you can do what is needed.
Maintance is very important on the 6.4 so if you don't like to look under the hood then this is not the motor for you.

Reading this thread is painful. Talk about going backwards! 10yrs ago having all the big dollar repair fuel guzzeling diesels was almost unheard of. Ask how many guys with the 7.3 ps have had 2 ,3, thousand dollar repairs with under 150k miles on them!
There's a threadjust below this one on how bad the 5.4 gasser is. What a joke. the 5.4 WILL get high teens on the highway and run over 200k miles without and huge repairs.
I hope the new Ford diesel is better than the 6.4 and 6.0

When you count the $7,000 additional cost of a diesel engine over a gasser, then add the additional maintenence costs for oil changes, fuel filters, urea fills, sootbag replacement on the 6.4's, unbelievable problems with the 6.0, and then look at the simplicity of the gas rigs, lower costs all around, etc. You are paying one hell of alot for that diesel power. I hope Ford at least has it right on this new diesel engine and hope it works, same thing with the new V-8. The Triton's may have been a little low on power but high on reliability. I'll take reliability any day over misguided power.

Dang! Now I don't know what to do on the whole issue. Before I bought the 2007 6.0, I had the 1999 7.3. I drove it until I had 89,000 on it. The only thing I ever bought for it was batteries and filters. Got good mileage-18mpg and it would pull my gooseneck cattle trailer as if it were not there.
I traded for the 6.0 and have had it in the waranty Ford shop 2 times in 9 months. Turbo work, EGR work and injector replacement. I only have 29,975 miles on it and
never thought it would have this kind of engine problems with no abuse of driving.
Before the 1999 7.3, I had the 460 gas engine and it had terrible gas mileage with or with out pulling a trailer.
I traded for the 6.0 and have had it in the waranty Ford shop 2 times in 9 months. Turbo work, EGR work and injector replacement. I only have 29,975 miles on it and
never thought it would have this kind of engine problems with no abuse of driving.
