Sorry if this posted twice. Anyway, looking for some help on these fenders if anyone has used them. Theyre glass fender 3 inches wider from mid fifties fords. Im told theyre made by gibbons. Also, if i use these do i need to change my running boards to match up with the wider fender.

I assume that you are talking about the rear fenders...they are fairly common and have pockets in the front lower edge so that the stock running boards mate up. Here's a photo of a 55 F100 that has the wider fenders installed...you can see the pocket in front of the tire.

 

OK i see, i wasnt sure if they would be too wide for the running board but that looks good. While your here, do you know recommend any one set or are the ones from mid fifties as good as any?

This truck belongs to a customer, I just straightened the fenders and painted them. I believe that he bought them at a swap meet. A word of caution...these fenders were very wavy and took a lot of sanding to make them straight. I can't help you with a recommendation for a particular vendor but whatever way you choose to go take a good look at the fenders (or better yet have your body/paint guy look at them) especially for how true they are where they attach to the bed. If you are not running welting like this truck then you better have a flat mating surface.

Oh yeah, as an added note....I sprayed the inner surfaces with bedliner to add some protection to the glass, rock chips can work on FG over time.

no longer in business, and Bebops Glassworks in Tennessee.. I got mine from Bebops direct.. altho everyone sells them (MF, Carpenter, LMC...)

like Charlie, I sprayed the inside of mine with clear Chipguard to protect them

Just to give you an idea of how bad these fenders were when I got to work on them here's a pic... The black sections are the high areas that had to be ground down, that is actually the fiberglass showing through. I would like to believe that this was just an aberration but I know that I would really look them over before handing them off to the body shop.

Sam, how were your fenders when you bought them? Hopefully a lot straighter than these. Ooops, just read your post...glad to hear that yours were perfect!

 

I've prepped a lot of fiberglass parts for paint over the years and they all tend to be somewhat wavy. Gibbons used to make some good parts, haven't worked with Bebops, and Fairlane (no longer in business) used to come and go on their quality. I've got a glass front end from Fairlane that is awful, the glass rear fenders were better, but still had some waves.





Definitely coat any glass fender with a couple of coats of a rubberized undercoating unless you like seeing star checks in your finished paint after a few days on the road. Ask me how I know.

 

While I cannot speak of the quality, or true source, SPEEDWAY MOTORS also sells +3 'glass rears... about $215 each

 

I plan on picking up a pair next tax return. Seems to be the only time the wife does not get mad when buying parts.

 

Hahaha, thats why i dont have one of those yet. Im going to finish the truck and then find a wife. I think you did it backwards. LOL anyway, mine shipped today from mid fifty, they are from a company called bebops, im told. I can let you know how they look when they show up.

 

What kind of prep are you guys doing to the back sides of fenders
before spraying on the bedliner/undercoat.I just bought a set of Bebops
rear fenders so I am getting ready to prep.

 

Mine were drop shipped from Bebops but purchased through Mid-Fifty. I, like Sam, thought they were excellent quality. I also sprayed them with an undercoating.

 

I did some light sanding, but they were pretty nice, then sprayed them with ChipGuard.

I also did the front of the cab at the fenders to protect the paint from rock chips

Yeah, i would be willing to sell mine, make me an offer. Theyve had a bit of patch work done on them but theyre nice and straight in a sort of lime green. Let me know
