Unhappy hard shifts

When going down the highway in six gear and i come to a hill with or without cruise on i get rough shift when it shifts down to 5th. loud bang sometimes. Happens about 1 out of every 3 or 4 shifts. 07 EB that just turned 60,000 miles this weekend. never serviced the trany yet. Any ideas. does it need serviced and a can of transmedic or trip to dealer. i have a new explorer on order but my daughter wants to buy the expy. if it doesn't clear up i may have to trade her in.

You might want to try a fluid change. I had some issues with the transmission thumping on down shift on my 08. Local driving, below 40 mph. Dropped the pan, replaced the filter and added fresh Ford SP fluid. Problem has almost totally cleared up and transmissions seems to shift better. Dropping the pan only gets about half the fluid. A total flush would probably be a better choice.

Took her to a local shop yesterday, they pumped out 15 quarts as they pumped in 14 quarts plus a quart of transmedic. Also did the 5000 mile oil change. 5w20 mobil one. The trans fluid coming out look brownish in color and the new stuff war a pretty red. This car has 60,000 miles and has never towed anything. She has the tow package with the trans cooler. Also put in her first fuel filter, just for fun. On the 8 mile trip home i downshifted it about dozen times by kicking her in passing gear and by turning off the over drive. She shifted like a new one with no problems what so ever. So everything looks good so far. Cost of the flush and fluid was $150. Service and fuel filter was $170 dollars. Had a 05 f250 last summer and it had bad shifting problems. Time the local ford dealer tried everything, then pulled the trany and replaced a internal valuve that was sticking, it was over $3000 dollars to fix. It has worked like new evey since. So I guess time will tell on the expedition.
