HELP! 94 7.3 IDI wont start

Im 17 and this is my first diesel. I live in illinois (cold right now), and Lately it has been taking a while to start when the truck is still warm, and finally i went to farm n fleet the other day and i walked back out after 15 mins and went to start my truck and all it did was turn over and over but wouldnt start. I had to get a tow .I have new glowplugs and relay. New batteries, and new starter. I do know my share about diesel motors but i CANNOT figure this out. Any help would be thankful.

  • Sometimes the GB are not getting power due to your cables not giving them enough to give them a strong burn.
  • Do you have any leaks on injectors? These IDI engines have a mechanical injection pump.
  • How many miles are on the vehicle
  • Have the injectors and injection pump ever been replaced?
  • Your fuel return lines could be shot. They tend to get hard then crack and let air into the fuel system and it loses its prime.
These are some of the very common problems. The forum is full of these posts and all the guys here are good to help you out. It sounds like it is not getting fuel to me.

If it would not start not a glow plug problem the engine would still be very warm sounds like fuel leak air intrusion look for obvious fuel leaks around return line[all those hoses running to injectors with clamps on them also the caps your hoses run to and from. The first thing i would look at is your mecanical fuel pump pasenger side of engine. Spin off your fuel filter and see if it is empty sounds like it to me.

Whats GB? You mean glow plugs??

Anyway, sound like air intrusion to me. Because air molecules are smaller than diesel molecules, air can get in the fuel system without any fuel leaking out. Usually the air gets in through the return lines so you might wanna look at those. If they are painted grey, they are original and due for replacement.

could be glowplugs if you just drove it in and only were gone 15 min, im doubting air intrusion is the culprit especially if this was all the sudden.it could be something with the ip as well.does the shut off solenoid click when you unplug it and plug it back in?what brand of glowplugs did you put in?

OK lets see if this works. FUEL PUMP on the lower right front of truck might not be giving the proper fuel pressure. Also when was the last fuel filter change? Also look on the frame for fuel leak of any kind. These fuel systems will drain back to the fuel tank and give you air to pump out of the system before starting.... Also DO NOT run the starter more than 2 minutes as the starter will crash and it is BIG $$ to replace. I have done all the things above. Also if your glow plug controler does not stay on very long. You either have a bad glow plug or the controler ground is bad. I fixed the ground several years ago by taking a wire direct from the battery (-) side and connecting it under the controller screw for the ground. This bypasses the having to make a ground thru the engine where it does rust and makes no contact.

Thank you all for the replies, I asked the original owner and he said the IP has never been replaced, 232,000 miles. WOW! also I put in Diesel Rx glowplugs, i had several people recommend them because the heads wont swell on these gp's. I put two 1050cc amp batteries on and a new starter (Mitsubishi Gear Reduction). I have moistness(diesel) behind the serpentine belt and on the motor, not dripping, just moist. Also the injectors are original but at 200,000 miles the truck had all new gaskets put on it. Its a strong runner when started but the starting problem is really bothering me. Between school and farming there is only so much time i have to work on it. I will check all these and get back to you. Thanks all! P.S i need a new crankcase breather tube and gasket.

Oh lord....that sounds like that engine has been hurting for an IP I bet that IP has already dug its own grave and is just waiting to jump in, the Injectors are probably at the same point. Replace all the injectors and the injection pump.
