Since there are over 9 different systems made by more than 3 manufacturers(Banks, ATS, Hypermax, ect...)you need to be specific with what you have or is after.

In a nut shell the exhaust gases are routed up to the turbo, through the hot side turbine and then back down the down pipe to the exhaust.
The hot side turbine shaft turns the intake side (cold side) turbine which draws air in through the air cleaner, compresses it and blows it into the intake.
The only other thing you need is an oil supply to the turbo and a way to get the oil to drain back into the engine.
The exact way each system does the above is slightly different, but that is a turbo system in simple terms.
