1989 F250 C6 Transmission woes

hey there,

So I fired up the ol' beast to plow the snow last week and behold my tranny is slipping like crazy.

I have looked through many results of different thread search attempts and found a few things to check (i.e vacuum, adjusting the band from the outside, etc)

However, I'm leaning to a rebuild. Why? The beast ran fine last fall and I decided to change the tranny fluid and filter. Yikes. I guess the 'crap' in the old fluid was helping the tranny limp along and create some friction/grip. Now, new fluid isn't so good for it in my humble opinion. (Note: I did not notice an abundance of metal debris in the pan when I changed the fluid/filter).

Anyway, do any of you have a good source for rebuild kits? I have done a few searches but haven't seen anything that matches what I need for the 89' F250 C-6 auto three speed.

The project won't start until after this snow season ends but I'm getting ready by researching and prepping. This will be my first tranny rebuild but I'm sure with a DVD, a good book, and a good rebuild kit, I can tackle it.

Thanks in advance!
Grizz

Plenty of sources for rebuild kits, ebay.com or tciauto.com or wittrans.com or transtar1.com or for above and beyond, go to eatmyshift.com and click on Monster in a Box.

Couldn't find anything for "street" machines at those sites. I'll have to wait until I get home to check E-bay (I can't stomach E-bay, but I have to wait until I get home to search it; the work PC won't allow us to go there)

Thanks,

i know this sounds like a stupid question, but did you check the trans fluid level?? it may just need a quart or two .

I have a F250xlt club/lwb with a 460. I am getting about 8 mpgs, any suggestion on
increasing the mpgs other that air/exhaust systems and has anyone seen much of an
improvement that has replaced exhause with a cat back and better air system.

Wow to go from a C6 Trans problem to this.

I have a 87 F250 with 6.9 diesel and C6 transmission. A few years ago it lost 2nd gear. So I took off the pan and valve body to find the band was loose and the wedges fell out. I put it back to together and adjusted it and it worked fine until now. It lost 2nd again so I got back in it to find the band is worn out and out of adjustment. So, I need to replace the band and I understand I need to remove the transmission to do so. Is the band for the diesel C6 transmission different than a standard C6 band? Should I get the Kevlar band I see advertised? Other than a front and rear seal and the band, what other parts may I need to need to do this job?

^^^

Since you'll be going through the trouble of dropping the trans, might as well do a full rebuilt.

I know I should but how much do I want to spend fixing up my beat up old 26 year old truck? The transmission pulled hard and shifted firm, never any slippage or other troubles until the band went. If I could change just the band without removing the transmission I would do just that.

You could replace it with a snap band without dropping the trans.
maybe do a search for info.

I've heard about the snap band but I don't know just how reliable they are. Have any of you ever used one? As for the regular band can anyone answer about them. Does the diesel C6 use a heavier duty band than a regular C6? Should I go with a kevlar band or is the "red" band sufficient?

I think all C6's were the same internally. The only difference was the vacuum modulator on the diesels.

OK thanks. I just didn't know if the C6 for the diesel used a heavier style band or not. What do you think about the kevlar band compared to the red one or standard band?
