1995 5.0 roller top end rebuild
Hey guys, i have a few questions regarding the rebuild im getting ready to do. I have a 1995 f-150 eddie bauer 4x4 with a 5.0 roller motor. i just rolled 100K and i need to rebuild my heads due to leaking valve stem seals. The motor still has great compression equally all the way around and it still runs strong. Questions are... What size valves does this head currently have and how big can i / should i go? stick with the stock cam and replace the roller lifters and all valve train and go to 1.7 rockers? replace the cam along with all valve train? rework stock heads? go to gt-40 heads? port match the stock intake and heads or go aftermarket intake? i already have LT's with no cats and dual flows, full msd ignition, 24lb injectors, twin 56mm TB, and cold air kit, going to delete smog pump and EGR during the rebuild, but not sure which way to go with the valve train. ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!!! also need some advice on companies for building a chip!

Is your truck mass air? If so go with GT40 or aftermarket heads and maybe a cam if you want more topend power out of the motor, but if you want to retain the stock powerband and just make it higher use the stock cam with 1.7 rockers. I don't recommend putting a red cent into the stock heads. Depending what you end up with for parts you should also consider putting the 19lb injectors back in, 24's are not doing anything for you except burn more fuel.

Thanks guys! heres the issues, there is a gt-40 and a gt-40p head. which one works? there are tons on the p's out there for pretty cheap but ive read that the configuration wont work with the f-150 but only the explorer. Please advise on this one!! also i cannot find a place (local to me in florida) that will do a dyno custom tune for the computer in the truck. i for a company that summit racing uses in like Arkansas, but they just want my mods and they will burn a chip and send it to me. also... what about the PTV clearance? how high of a cam profile can i go to with before binding up the valves?
so from the info you both have givin me it looks like going with the gt-40/gt-40p heads, stock intake, 1.7 rockers, and tune. right? safe? power gain?

Both the gt 40 & the gt 40 p heads will work , but the p heads have a different plug angle so i would try to find a set of gt 40s , i live in florida , had a dyno tune done at mustang specalties in pompano , custom burned chip , there very good , most good mustang shops can tune a 302 , theres not much difference with the truck , PTV clearence ? depending on the cam & valve size , allways good to check it when building , i run an E 303 cam with 1.72 RR on a 92 302 HO with 1.90- 1.60 valves in dooe heads with no clearence problems , thats about 5.30 lift...Lew

If there is going to be any port matching needed it will be on the exits of the lower intake where they meet the heads... they tend to narrow down excessively the last inch or so. And I'll say it again, if you just add GT40's and 1.7 rockers you may as well put 19lb injectors back in and save the hastle of having the motor dyno tuned. There is no need for 24's with this combo as 19's will support 300hp easy.

Well here is a little history on the motor. It had 3 bad injectors, a leaking timing chain cover, leaking lower intake gasket, and a bad coil. It sat in the mountains for about a year with a cover on it and was hardly driven before that. I had found a 375hp 306 to put in it but it needed a an intake and injectors as they were sold off the motor. So I put the 24# in and replaced the other bad things more or less as a bandaid. Well the shop that had it shut down over a weekend and no one knows where the guys went or the motor. So I decided to save some money and give life back the 302 that's in it. Now I have brand new 24's and no 19's. Would I need a tune with the gt-40 and 1.7's with 24#? Or could I get away with leaving the stock program? Truck currently runs great. Just has a lot of valve train noise and leaks oil from the valve stems.
