Question Roller Rockers for Ford 300 Carborated

So I was thinking of putting in some roller rockers in my ford 300 to free up some hp bevause i heard the switch willl be a gain of 15hp. Im not sure on whether to use bbc/bbf or sbc/sbf roller rockers because I would prefer to not have to change the rocker posts out but its not a big deal. And by the way I was gonna use a 1.7 ratio rocker. And also what are all the things that i need to do inorder for this to work because i heard of people saying to run rod guides and its all confusing.

If just a switch to roller rockers could free up 15 hp there would be a huge rush to do so...but there isn't. 15 hp is a bit of a stretch. JMO

Ok yeah it is a little bit of a stretch but but would frre up some hp and give me a bigger lift so it can breath easier too

Just going to roller rockers is not going to free up any measurable HP. If you are talking about roller rockers with a higher ratio, like 1.75:1 compared to the stock 1.6:1 rockers, then you may get a few extra HP (probably not 15, though). For $ spent, roller rockers are not a big HP gainer. I just bought a set of 1.75:1 standard rockers for my 300 for $46.

Roller rockers are used in high performance engines with high valve lift mainly because they reduce side forces on the valve stem and valve guides.

You will notice a bit of a power increase with the 1.7's. Harland Sharpe is the only manufacturer that I know of who makes r.rockers specifically for the 300. Sbc, sbf, or bbf WILL NOT WORK. Unless you are using the Harland Sharpe ones (listed under AMC on their website for some reason, $265), you have to use bbc r.rockers. You can find a used set on ebay for about $100. Stay away from the cheap Chinese Pro Comp ones.

Installing them brings the p.rod closer to the valve side of the slot in the head. And you have to check to see where the roller tip is contacting the v.tip through the entire v.movement. It should start just past center on the dizzy side of valve, and move past center to the same point on the exhaust side of the v. IMO you would be better off to get the lift from the cam. I would also change your timing gears to metal/metal because of the added strain.

pushrod guidplate conversion kit. I have intsalled it on my 90 cyl head and it all works just fine. Crane part number 36655-16 will give you 3/8 studs and guideplate for 5/16 pushrods. If you go this route hardened pushrods are not required becuse the kit has nylon inserts in the guidplates. I had to mix a couple of kits on mine cause I needed 7/16 studs for BBC rockers I already had. It is best for long life of the nylon inserts if you polish the pushrods to make sure there are no burrs on them. This is easy to do in a drill.
This conversion kit will also make your valvtrain adjustable.



You can buy ARP screw in studs from Summit Racing for about $35. Most of the bbc rockers will be 7/16", but there are a few with 3/8".

ok so if i get 7/16 studs installed in the head then the bbc rockers are just a bolt in thing no other work needed?

Also my ford 300 is a 1973
And it .30 over,high comp pistons, ithink a 270 cam,clifford intake and split exhaust, holley 4barrel

ok never mind scratch what i said. So are you telling me that if i switch to a 7/16 stud i can run the bbc ones?

About 95% of the bbc r.rockers are 7/16" shaft/studs. I have bbc r.rockers with 3/8" studs, but the 7/16" are much easier to find. Crane makes them for a 409 bb with 3/8" studs, but they run about $500 new!!

You are responsible to do your research before you buy, and to make sure your v./rocker/p.rod geometry is correct. There are many forum members, myself included, who use the bbc r.rockers.

It sounds like you'll have a real nice engine when you finish.

So how i figure out if my geometry is good with bbc rockers? How did you install them on your 300? Also is there any real difference between sbc and bbc rockers?

Dude, what did I just write? Yes, there is a difference! But buy whatever you like.

Install them just like your oem rockers, put each piston at tdc and tighen to zero lash, then tighten allen nut, and tighten big nut a quarter turn. Do int/exh. on each cylinder, and go to the next at tdc.

When you install the first one, mark top of valve with a felt pen, then torque down the rocker at zero lash, then turn engine by hand 360 degrees, until that piston is at tdc on compression stroke again. Remove the rocker and look at the felt pen mark. It will show you where the roller rolled on the valve tip. It should start at the 1/3 point on the distributor side of engine, and roll across the center, and finish at the 1/3 point at the exhaust side of engine. If it shows the roller is too far one way or the other, then the geometry is off, and you have to get longer/shorter p.rods.

Let's assume you check several rockers and all your pushrods are too short. The best way to establish the proper length is to use an adjustable checking pushrod. Crane, Isky, and others offer adjustable pushrods, but the slickest tool is made by Comp Cams. This tool screws apart just like the others, but rather than having to measure the actual length of the pushrod, the Comp Cams tool reads out the length on the side of the pushrod just like a micrometer. Comp sells individual checking pushrods, or you can purchase an entire set intended for those who build many different types of pushrod engines. With this tool, you merely adjust the length of the pushrod until the witness mark is on the inboard third of the valve-stem tip. Then count the number of turns the pushrod is lengthened and you have the proper pushrod length, since each turn is worth 0.050 inch. It's best to wait until you've mocked up the engine for the last time to check for pushrod length. This way, a change to installed height or a cam change won't require a pushrod change.

These are the Crane Gold Race rockers. I got lucky and found this $500 new set at the auto swap meet for $100.
