8.8 rear disc brake swap

i was looking at putting rear disc brakes on my 87 F150 with the 8.8 rear end. My thoughts were IF the flanges line up, i was going to do a swap off of a 97 - newer F150 with an 8.8. i realize that i'm going to have to re-drill the rotor to fit the correct bolt pattern, but other than this and other minor nuances ( i think i'm going to have to run a 16 inch wheel) does anyone see any issues with this swap?? is there a better swap out there??

i had this setup on another car (since burnt to the ground) and i wasn't very pleased with it ... really was hoping to go with the "drum in hat" e-brake, it's a manual transmission, so e-brakes come in handy ...

Why go disk The stock drum brakes are big enough even for towing. My truck has rear anti locks, and i know that disks don't lock up and drums do, ( thus the anti lock design ), but still....why ?

I was awaiting the "why not go drum" post ... simply put, i'm going autocrossing. I want to show imports that my old truck can haul more than lumber ...

Rear disks are far superior to drums..there are good reasons you don't see any drums on the newer trucks. From what I understand the parts from the Explorer 8.8 will bolt right on the F150 axle and of course the rotor has to be drilled for the larger bolt pattern, I have been wanting to do to my truck for some time now but haven't stumbled across the parts yet.

I don't understand why when someone brings up the idea of rear discs, at least 1 person has to bring up some crazy theory about drums somehow being superior. Such nonsense.

From my understanding, the Crown vic has the exact same brake parts. I've done this swap before onto cars, but i was concerned that the rotor wouldn't clear the larger F150 axle end ... hmmm ...

They were superior .... in the 1950's ... lol.

I didn't start a thread to discuss whether or not it's a good idea, i've already made up my mind to do the swap, i'm just looking for the right set of parts ...

i've always wanted to try it myself...never got around to it...im thinkin the best way to do it might be the explorer option since they used the 15" rims

As i stated before, my only concern with that setup is clearing the axle flange. if someone verified that i could do it with that setup, i'd be all over it! I'm kinda odd in the fact that i dont like going aftermarket when there's a factory swap out there, the main reason being when it comes time to replace a pad, rotor, or caliper, i don't need to go searching across the cyber universe to find it, i can go to my friendly NAPA store...

The explorer rotor won't clear the 150 axle flange as is. The flange has to be turned down just a bit. The hub opening might need enlarging a fraction. Everything else (after drilling 5x51/2 pattern) is bolt on.

Maybe that one person figures if all wheel drums are good enough for a 80,000 pound semi, they are good enough for a pickup....

(I like all wheel disks on pickups, expecally if off roading, they work way better when wet then a drum)

Any idea if there is a different off the shelf rotor that will fit without mods?
