302 from serpentine to good ole v-belts

So I just swapped a 302 H.O. from a lincoln mark VII LSC into my 81 ford as can be seen in my thread in the engine swaps forum. I figured I'd start a more specific thread for this (probably dumb) question. So, this new engine was equipped with a serpentine setup. I don't have any of the brackets, or the tensioner, so I figured it might not be so bad to just keep with v-belts. My old power steering pump would prefer it. However, knowing that my new engines water pump turns ccw and my old v-belt turned cw, what's a good part number or application to get a cw water pump that bolts right up to this motor? I tried the water pump off my old 351w (which had seen better days anyway), and it was a no go unless I left one bolt out. And If I do go this route, aside from maybe having to modify a couple brackets, any problems I might expect to run into?

Go to the parts store and have them look up a waterpump for a 79 mustang. It had a serpentine set up but ran a forward rotation water pump. It still ran reverse flow, but it was forward rotation.

I have a waterpump for a 93 F-350 on my motor and am running a mechanical fuel pump with serpentine pulleys. My timing cover is for forward rotation but the pump is for reverse rotation. The back of the new pump has a circle on each end instead of the little tombstones. These circles are supposed to be the remedy of reverse and forward rotation.

seems plausible. Years ago I worked for an industrial alternater shop, and we had cw fans and ccw fans to cool the alternator, all depended on the belt direction of the big rig. On certain applications we'd sell them a straight fin fan that was "universal." Truth is, it wasnt as good at cooling but it still got the job done without burning up stators and rectifiers. I assume the same principals would apply to water. I'd still prefer a cw specific water pump but it's definately good advice on your part. And if no other ideas come in, I'll go with that.

The 79 mustang and early 80's lincoln mark VII have forward rotation pumps. The parts stores online say they were v-belt motors although they were actually serpentine. The belt routing ran them in reverse rotation.

so, I am having trouble wrapping my mind around this. Are you saying that if I put on a 79 mustang water pump it will be fine with v-belts running forward rotation and still bolt to my late 80s timing cover? It's just confusing me because if 79s were actually serpentine, how would they spin forward? Any serpentine I have seen, the belt goes around the water pump, and then to the left side of the crank pulley. If it goes to the left side of the crank pulley (looking at it straight on), then it will turn the water pump ccw. If there were a case where the belt went around the top of the water pump, around the power steering and then the crank, then it would spin cw. I can't find a belt diagram for 79 mustangs however. Were there any 80s 5.0s that ran v-belts and still will bolt to a late model timing cover? Some forums I saw, people claimed that 84 crown vics with a 5.0 fit the bill. Any thoughts? I don't want to take any chances on this. Again, I definately appreciate the help, I just am having trouble understanding.

I was just as confused as you.

The 79 mustang and early 80's lincoln mark VII's ran the reverse rotation diagram for the serpentine belt. The waterpump is a forward rotation pump. The pump is identical on the outside to the pump used all the way up to 93 F-150 with a 5.8 (351 windsor) The late 80's and newer, up to 93, possibly later run a reverse rotation pump.

I am using serpentine on my 74 351 windsor. I am using all the brackets from a 1989 351 w F-150.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/love_ford_trucks/5232717354/" title="SSPX0514 by ford collection, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5164/5232717354_95845aa4a4.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="SSPX0514" /></a>

I went with a waterpump from 1989 also. The back plate for the water jacket has the circles instead of tombstones. The fan in the pump is reverse rotation. The 89 runs the same belt routing as the 79 mustang and mark VII.

If you are going to run v-belts you should be able to use the waterpump and all your 302 brackets on the mark VII motor. The timing cover is the same as your 81.

I think to run the v-belts, the waterpumps are cast iron. The one on my 83 F-150 is and on my dads 83 F-100. My 74 351 windsor was also a cast iron waterpump with V-belts originally.

Well I found the solution to my problem. Summit Racing sells a clockwise water pump for v-belt applications, that fits 85-2001 5.0 liter engines. I figured I'd post a link in case anyone else ever runs into the same problem.

Ford Racing M-8501-G351 - Ford Racing Mechanical Water Pumps - Overview - SummitRacing.com

I decided I didnt want to start screwing around with the timing cover and stuff, so this should be the fix for me.

Was your truck a 302 to begin with with v-belts? If it was, you can use everything from that engine on your new one. The reverse rotation stuff is for the serpentine. They mark VII you got the donor motor from uses the same timing cover as the v-belted engines. The v-belt waterpump are cast iron and have A different case than the serpentine.

Nah the engine that was in my truck was a 351w, so I'm starting kinda from scratch. I had tried the water pump off the 351 and it wouldnt bolt up. and since the 302 HAD serpentine and I want to change it over to v-belts, the direction is wrong. I took the water pumps apart and the impeller on the 302 water pump is ccw. I tried to just change the impeller from my old cw 351 water pump but it seems to be pressed on or something. So oh well, I'll spend the 60 bucks and be certain that I have what I need.

The water pump, timing cover, exhaust manifolds, and valve covers on the 351 windsor and 302 are the same. Do you have a 351 m?

it's definately a windsor. Yes the timing cover does fit the 302. I don't want to change it though. And it has a hole in the side for a mechanical fuel pump, which I'm not going to be using. The water pumps are not the same however. If you put them side by side they have subtle differences. I don't know the history of the truck, and I don't know what someone may have put on there, but I know for sure that of the two water pumps I have, neither one will do what I want it to do.
