Ive been pondering this for a few days now. Is there anything Im missing on this plan. The goal is to make this a subtle but complementary change to the roof line on my Uni. I know the windshield, gasket and stainless trim will have to be modified but is there any comments or thoughts on my approach? Your input is appreciated.

 

There's an FTE member who posted a link to his Unibody project which included pic's of lowering the roof. I bookmarked the link but can't seem to find it. Did copy few pic's but hopefully he, or another member who bookmarked the thread will chime in. I did copy a few pic's, which is of little help. oh if only I can find his gallery.

There's an article in back issue of Classic Truck Magazine: 'top drop' Dec. 03 issue 64 Ford pickup. Might try going to their website tech/articles and see if able to locate in their archives. I made a copy, and save on pdf file; unfortunately computer illiterate and can't get article downloaded to photobucket gallery, I can try emailing, about 6 pages, if interested.

 

My uncle and I did it on a 65 using two tops. We removed two inches all the way around. We cut the roof in four pieces off center and opposite each other. We had about a half to three quarter strip to weld across and from door to door and from front to back. We had to make a few vertical cuts about three inches long on the back corners to spread the roof to match the rear window openings. We got it all welded by a neighbor and then hammer and dollied the work. A little body filler smoothed it all out. We have never gotten back to the project and it sits in his garage in Florida. The tough part is getting the windshield cut down because of the curve in the glass.

 

Unfortunately a angle chop will really look potentially hokey due to the opposing angles of the roof and the body line moving up and the roof running down.

Make a print and do the chop on it and see just what it looks like. Only then decide.

Please make no mention of the classics trucks chop as the method they used to chop is suited for parallel A pillars (Think Chevy) and not for the moving in two angles as is a slick. Plus the truck required a $2 to 4K Custom windshield. Nothing ever progressed past the stage it was in possibly due to having a heart attack on the windshield cost. If anyone else knows if the truck was finished let me know.

Kyle is 100 percent on what has to be done. the roof needs to be sectioned in four pieces. Shrink from side to side and grow front to rear. A second roof is needed for the filler piece. Figure on at least three windshields to cut down until you get it correct.

At least a stock windshiled is 150 bucks not 4K...LOL

I think; that only taking 3/4" out is alot of work and cost involve; I would cut more.
