2004 F-150 5.4l 4wd crew


The shift cable on my son's truck came loose from the transmission switch/actuator arm. Somebody tried to help my daughter in law get on the road by wiring the end of the cable to the transmission lever. There is no part of the plastic mechanical connector remaining attached to either the transmission lever or the end of the shift cable. Evidently, according to the parts catalog drawing, the connector on this F150 is the round ball type part, which I have never seen, but different than the flat half-domino on my F250 and my daughter's E350.


Question: Is there a source for the ball type connector, without buying the whole cable assembly; or does anybody know of a similar hardware item that will make this connection?

No you pretty much have to buy the whole cable extension unless you find a shop that has just the plastic piece sitting around. Which is pretty slim.

 

Thanks for the responses. I knew it was a long shot, just hoped there might be a source for the small part to save them some money.

Just to update this the parts are available at oriellys

 

I called oriellys they can't find it -do you have a part number

 

I bought mine at the ford dealer. But it was a few years ago. Getting it pulled into and positioned in the shifter was harder than expected.

Problem solved! My shift cable fell off yesterday morning while backing out of my driveway... not a good start to my commute. I was able to rig it using zip ties to get it driveable, but it wasn't a permanent solution. I went to Advanced Auto Parts and found this! Part # 14041. This bushing pack is an exact fit for these trucks (mine is a 2004 Fx4 with floor shift). The correct bushing was the only one with a part # on it and it said "China". It snapped right in and it was fixed! $7 is much better than buying a new shift cable! Hope this helps!

 

Thanks for this post- especially to fsupeej22. Part number was exactly right. Your description of the bushing was spot on! (I also found only 1 that had the part number stamped on it.) As a help to future readers, the new bushing snapped into the socket with a good account of thumb pressure. Putting the ball on the metal arm into the new bushing required channel locks. However, I still did the entire replacement for less than $7 and under 30 minutes. Saved cost of tow truck, replacement cable from Ford, and labor to replace the cable. I'm super pleased. Thanks again guys!

Is this part the same at the shift lever as well? Mine came loose at the top end inside the console and it's the rounded ball type. I bought the bushings but I don't wanna force it on if it's not the right one. Also, mine was so far gone I can't tell which direction it would go. Anyone have a picture of it?

 

Thanks to fsupeej22! I had this problem on mt 2004 SCREW earlier this week. The Help! parts pack should be available at most major parts stores (I found mine at Auto Zone). Was up and running in less than 30 minutes!

I was also told by Tranny shops and others the whole cable must be replaced. Not true!!! O'rileys has the fix-it kit. Its made by Dorman and fixes others as well. You will have some extra parts you don't need. Dorman makes a fix-it kit for so many things and I'm glad they do. Easy fix on the tranny end of the shift cable. Renzo
