I bought a used 99 Expedition and was given only one key and remote. I went to a dealer and bought a new key (they cut it) and remote. Dealer was busy and told me it would be several hours to program new key and remote.

Have stopped by several dealers and they all tell me I need to leave the vehicle for several hours until they can get to it. I know this takes them a minute or 2 to do.

Is this something I can do myself? If so where can I get detailed instructions.

Your owners manual has the instructions for programing remotes and new keys.

According to the manual:

"Take ALL your vehicles transmitters to your dealer for reprogramming." Nothing about keys that I can find.

I just don't want to spend 2 hours plus at a dealership for them to take 2 minutes to do this and then give them $50 for it.

Not what I call a good value for my time and money.

 

I stand corrected, you need 2 previously programed keys and then you can follow the instructons in your owners manual for programing extra keys. At least my 2000 f150 manual has this info. It also has the info for programing a new remote when you have lost one. I would be more than happy to relay the info. for remotes if you like but it sounds like the dealer is going to have to help anyway.
I would purchase another key and have three on hand so If one is lost you still have two to program with. By the way you can only add extra keys 8 times. After that it won't accept any further attempts.

To program the extra key, you'll have to have the dealer do it since you only have one key. You can do it yourself only if you have 2. Previously to '99 it was possible to do with just one key. Now to program the extra remote(s), take your key and start in the accessories on position (Don't start the truck) the go to of position and back to accessories on. You need to do it like 8 or 10 times with in 5 seconds or so. Basicly just keep gong from the on, off to on position until you hear you electric locks cycle in the doors then press the lock button on every remote remote you want to program (It can recognize up to 4 remotes). When you do this with each remote, you'll hear the locks cycle also. BTW, make sure when you stop turning the ignition key from on (accessories) to off postion that you stop in the ON position when the locks cycle. Also make sure you program even you original remote because this process clears all remotes.

For anyone who has a 1997 Exp., it is possible to program a second key yourself. I went to one dealership and they swore up and down that I had to have both keys and alot of money but I knew from this forum that I could do it and it didn't say anything in the manuals about the key system. Went to another dealership and they didn't think I would be able to do it myself either. They cut a key for me and turn the truck on and off with the first key and then put the second key in and it turned right over. So luckily I only had to pay the price of the second key. Hope this helps someone out.

it takes at least 2 keys allready programed keys for you to do it yourself, so the several hour wait is a must sometimes we just get busy, first come first serve, make an app. for later and then maybe youll be able to wait. there is a computer that has to be used when only 1 key is programmed.

I've got an 03 f150, I've got 2 keys but when I tried to program another 1(command start) it wouldn't let me. When I talked to a lock smith he informed me that there were no programming spaces left on the truck. Does anyone know if the old keys(that I don't have) can be erased?

Just to be clear:
1997-1998 Expy, which has the PATS Type "A" System only requires ONE key and no scan tool to add another programmed key. It can be programmed for up to 16 keys.

1999 -2002 uses the Type "C" PATS and requires TWO working keys and no scan tool to add another programmed key. It can be programmed for up to 8 keys.

2003 - 2005 uses the Type "E" PATS and requires TWO working keys and no scan tool to add another programmed key. It can be programmed for up to 8 keys.

If the maximum number of keys have been programmed and you need to add another key, a scan tool is needed to erase key memory.

The Type "A" System is a stand alone system and the type "C" system is integrated into the instrument cluster. They will not keep the vehicle from cranking over with an invalid key, but will disable the fuel injectors.
The type "C" system is integrated into the PCM and has starter interupt capability if an invalid key is used.

 

Are you sure? I was under the impression that when you program an additional key, the first one gets bumped out. A first in first out type of system.

 

Not on the PATS Type A C or E.

That sounds like you are thinking of some of the aftermarket remote start systems.

Just went through this with the 01 Expedition I picked up. Since I only had one key I had to go to the dealer. I had them erase any old keys and reprogram the original and new key. Took about 20 minutes, cost for the key/cut $10.60, shop time $60.00. I did the remotes myself, easy process. I had already located the door access code under the dash. Went through the same thing when I bought the 99 Expedition. As mentioned, if you have two keys you can program another one yourself.
