2008 6.4 Diesel Transmission Flush

The recommended transmission flush service that the dealer offers is $349. That 18 quarts of Motorcraft Mercon ATF, filter, and labor. (They're charging you $175 for the filter, that you can get online for $74) The oil is $7.49 a quart.

So my question is this. I have heard that some trucks experience major transmission problems resulting from the power flush. Is it really necessary to blast all of the fluid through the system? Why not just drain what comes out from dropping the pan?
The power flush blows everything through the coolers, both back and fourth, causing who knows what to the system.

Some folks say you do. The regular transmission service is drain, filter change & refill. Mine has never been flushed in 109K miles. BTW- The tranny fluid is Mercon SP or LV, not the old Mercon. Yes that stuff is pricey.

You might find another dealer who will be more in line with prices. I am getting my transmission flushed and job #1 canister filter changed next Monday. Flush $179.95 canister filter $69.95 These filters used to sell for over $100 and for some reason they came down in price.

Someone mentioned a "special tool" to remove the external filter. What exactly does this "tool" look like?

My dealer quoted $225 for the service today...

I asked if that was a hot flush to get the converter done too.

That was just for dropping the pan, changing the "filter" and adding 8 quarts.

The hot flush was "gonna be about $500".

No thanks, my local/independent transmission shop (with a ton of 6.4/5R110 experience) will do the hot flush for $250+.

I'll be doing my shortly and adding a Mag Hy-tec high capacity pan and DieselSite remote bypass filter when I'm at it and should be able to do all that for under $700.

At power levels below 600 RWHP that should be all I need, and I don't beat on my truck either so I'm not planning on a built tranny, just good service/fluids/etc.

im looking into this fluid changing right now and ive got a couple questions.

1. i have a job 1 truck but i dont see an external filter. Do some job 1 trucks not have an external filter?

2. how many quarts of fluid do I need to buy if im doing just a drain and refil?

3. if my truck is currently filled with mercon SP would it be ok to top it off with Mercon LV?

4. Should i change the internal filter when i drop the pan?

I took mine in a couple of years ago to get it flushed and the told me "it is marked on the transmission not to do a line flush". I prefer the converter to be flushed out.

Blending oil for 20 years I wouldn't mix chemistry's of ATF with out seeing the CofA to make sure you won't having a gelling issue. stick to the manufactures spec's.

My dealer down here charges $280.00 for the hot flush, and the service mgr says he believes in it. IDK, since I haven't done it yet.

Yes you can, the fluids are compatible.

Approval to Service ALL 5R110 Automatic Transmissions with MERCON® LV

Beginning immediately ALL (2003 to 2010 MY) 5R110 automatic transmissions can be serviced with MERCON® LV automatic transmission fluid in place of MERCON® SP.

Initially only the 2009/10MY 5R110 automatic transmissions were filled and serviced with MERCON® LV. In an effort to reduce complexity, Ford Motor Company is allowing all previous model year 5R110 automatic transmissions to be serviced with MERCON® LV automatic transmission fluid. This pertains to top off as well as fluid replacement. Mixing of MERCON® LV and MERCON® SP in the 5R110 transmission is acceptable. Extensive testing has been performed to insure there are no functional or durability concerns with the use of MERCON® LV in the 5R110 automatic transmission.

Vehicles affected are F-Series Super Duty trucks (including chassis cab, motorhome, LCF).

Motorcraft MERCON® LV is now available in three sizes:
Part Number: XT-10-QLVC - 1 quart
Part Number: XT-10-DLV - 55 gallon drum
Part Number: XT-10-BLV - Bulk

Further information can be found in the Workshop Manual, Section 307-1, Automatic Transmission

Had both our Torqueshifts flushed a few weeks back, dealer said not to worry about the filter until you are at higher mileage, first one only has 30K so they just did the hot flush. Second has 105K so they did fluid and filter. Prices have gone down since we had it done on our 6.0L several years ago, well under $300. Used to push $500 IIRC

I truly believe in the hot flush. I had it done, supplied the filters, and had the cooling system flushed and refilled for $400.00. The transmission shifted alot smoother afterwards and its been 10,000 miles and no ill effects. I'd say there are surely those out there who have had a bad experience with the flush but not me. YMMV

I was pretty ticked when I found out the $200 flush at my dealer was just a drain and refill of 8 quarts. Not even changing the filter. I'm not sure what kind of filters you guys have but I used to buy the external filter for my 6.0 at dieselfiltersonline.com for cheap. I think I paid less than $20.I can get Mercon Sp from my Oreilly's for $5 a qt. I changed the filter every 30k and I drained the 8qts in the pan every 15k. My tranny lasted until 279k and that was running 120hp tune at a minimum and towing 6,000 lbs for 85% of my miles. One thing I noticed is that every 15k the fluid came out bright red and clean. I guess the no. 1 killer of auto trannys is heat and the no2 killer is running burnt black fluid that has been broke down by high heat. I worked that truck like a borrowed mule and was more than impressed with that tranny. I think I could have limped it a while longer it was just downshifting hard so I had it rebuilt. Just my .02 boys and girls.

If you have no external filter then I would recommend changing that for sure.

Good luck

I wouldn't change the internal filter until 60k

Mercon LV is backwards compatible with SP, you cant get SP anymore unless its old stock.
