We have several sets of the 19.5" x 6" Budd 89340s that are again available in Oregon. I'll be traveling that direction with the trailer in a few weeks and will haul them back to Illinois. If any western states guys have interest in sets, and would save on shipping by leaving them in Oregon, please speak up. Stu
|
I'm at present headed east with several sets of 19.5" wheels and tires on the trailer. Some of them with tires look worth saving. Should be back in Illinois mid week or so. Stu
|
Do you ever come thru Oklahoma?? I need 4 of those, but shipping kills it. I'm hoping to find some at the big Chickasaw OK, swap meet coming up.
|
Sorry, I've got a trip east planned for October but nothing your direction. Shipping of four bare wheels to OK would probably be around $200. If you were to consider it, buying four with useable tires already mounted would add some to your shipping cost, but would save you having to spend serious money on new tires. You might check with R&L Carriers to get an estimate, 1 (800)543-5589. I drop off at their Springfield, IL, depot and would suggest a depot pickup on your end, saves a lot. Each wheel and tire is about 100 lbs, so a pallet of four would be about 400 lbs. Stu

I'll be headed to Milwaukee tomorrow morning to attend Bob Jones' Truckfest 2014. Along the way I'll be dropping off a set of 19.5s with a member near Rockford, and have a second set loaded in the van if one of you northern guys is needing a set and will be going to Bob's. Save on shipping. Stu

Budd wheels
Do you still have these wheels, I would like to buy 7.
|
I see you are in WA. I have sets in Illinois, but do not have a set in OR right now. I can ship if you need them soon, or can let you know when my son has more out near you. Please let me know. Stu

What I need is 19.5 inch diameter Budd wheels by 6 inch wide with 5 holes on an 8 inch diameter circle. Im looking for a tubeless wheel to mount radial tires. the plan is to replace the 17.5 diameter split rim tube type wheels on my 1972 Dodge Traveco. I am looking for 7 but could make 6 work. I have functional tires right now so I can wait a while. I can drive to Portland Oregon in 3 hours. How far is your son from Portland?
|
Our son Michael lives right in Portland. I'll make sure I'm right that he has none right now and will post an update later.
The wheels on your Dodge Travco are most likely Budd #66520. You'll find that number on the concave side rim lips. They are 17" x 6" and use 7.50 x 17" tube type tires. They have a Goodyear style locking side ring rim. The tubeless replacement for that is the Budd #89340 that I have advertised here. It is 19.5" x 6", and is best used with 8R19.5" tires. The 8R19.5" will very closely match the diameter of your current 7.50 x 17s. Stu |
I confirmed the #66520 on the rim. I knew they were 17 inch but typed 17.5 in error. I do have 7.50X17 tires on some of the wheels and want to match this diameter. Are we still talking $85 per wheel?
|
Yes, same money. In situations where we are shipping bare wheels we will pass on to the buyer the exact amount it costs one of us to have tires pulled and recycled. It's cheaper than paying shipping with tires. Since you are picking up a set from Michael hopefully you can take them with tires. In a rare case where a set has nearly new tires (no wear, cracks, scars, etc) we will ask $25 each for the tires. Beats paying $200+ for new ones. Otherwise the tire and wheel are $85 together and it's the buyer's decision whether to use the old tires or have them recycled. Stu
|
That all sounds good. So I would definately wish to purchase a set of 7 or 6. When do you think they can be in Portland?
|
Hard to know. Last summer we had none for several months, then had our yard come up with several sets all at once. Those I hauled back to Illinois. We thought another set was to become available at that time, but it didn't pan out. Stu

1954 Ford C600 COE wheels
The tire shops in Phoenix will not replace the 8.25 x 20 tires on my 1954 C600 COE because they are 5 lug on 8 inch widowmaker split rims. A guy in Tucson has a set of split rims with the ring on the outside for $100 each. Is this my best option? Will the one piece 19.5's clear the drum on my two speed rear end?

With any of the two piece wheels it is critical to ensure that the rims and rings remain together as matched sets. Mix matching designs, and even widths within the same design, is very dangerous. If you get loose rings and rims I can help you mate up the sets. Most of these wheels will be either 4.33", 5.00", or 6.00" wide when measured down inside across the inner rim base. The 4.33" and 5.00" are best suited to 7.50 x 20" tires. The 6.00" is needed if you intend to stay with 8.25 x 20" tires. The 19.5" x 6" wide Budd #89340s will clear rear drums. You will find, however, that the recommended 8R19.5" tires are about 4" shorter in diameter than your present 8.25 x 20s. If you go with the 7.50 x 20s the difference will be about 3". Even though shorter in diameter, the 19.5s look correct mounted on the truck. Hope that helps. If questions remain please say. Stu |
Thanks Stu!
The tire shop said they would work on the external split rims. I did not ask the width of the rims from the salvage yard, I think they came off a military bus. I will ask more questions before driving 3 hours to inspect them. I'm hoping he will make me a better deal for 6. Not sure what to offer him. I can't believe many people call him looking for these, or am I wrong? |
No, you're not wrong. Most guys opt for the tubeless variety anymore. As for price, it's hard to say. If you're dealing with one of the big AZ yards, like DVAP, they know their stuff is golden to us rust belt types. It's been a few years since I've been down your way but know the yards I hit were real proud of their stuff. Stu

Hi Stu,
i am looking for a set of 19.5 wheels like you had listed and sold. 5 x 8" bolt pattern to fit 1938 ford truck. Currently I have the old split rim style and would like to change radials for safety and better balance. Do have any or know someone who may. Thanks for your time Terry C. |
Terry - I do have several sets here in Illinois. As I think through it, however, I don't recall having anyone with a 1938 or earlier truck make this conversion. Your truck is the last of the mechanical brake era, and has 15.125" ID rear drums. Later juice brake trucks have 15" ID rear drums. I don't know whether that 1/8" ID was teamed with a correspondingly larger outside drum diameter. I'd hate to have you buy wheels then find you need a rear spacer, for instance, to achieve drum clearance. I see you live in Michigan which is a long way to gamble on shipping.
Are your original 20" wheels not worthy of continued use, or are you just wanting the ease of tubeless radials? The tube type two piece wheels of your era can still be used if undamaged. Another option for you would be the 22.5" tubeless wheels. I have no question that these would clear your drums. A drawback to them is narrow tire availability. The narrowest available today is a 9R22.5" which equates to an 8.25" x 20" tube type. If you wish to try the 19.5s and wish to perhaps start with shipping one to check rear drum clearance I'll be happy to do that. Stu |
Add me to the list!
I am also looking for a set (6) of 1 piece widow maker replacement wheels for my "new" toy. Finally got her running & am dying to get on the road!
|
I can fix you up. I see you are in Mississippi. I can ship you a set without tires, or can ship with tires if you wish. The tires aren't great, some fine cracking, but might get you by until you can get new ones. If you read back through this thread I've listed the R&L Carriers phone number to allow you to call for a shipping quote. I deliver to their Springfield depot where they shrink wrap the wheels to a pallet. If you can pick up at a depot on your end it saves money. A pallet of six bare wheels weighs right at 300 lbs. About twice that weight with tires. Stu

Thank you sir. Let me see how available & affordable tires would be locally & I'll let you know if I need just wheels or both. What is the best way to contact you?

This works, or the direct email is stu_sandymcmillan at sbcglobal dot net.
Edit - in your search for tires, I'd suggest you focus on the 8R19.5" size because they are a taller diameter than the other 225/70R19.5" size that is appropriate for a 6" wide rim. The 8R19.5" tire will very closely match the stock 18" wheels and 7.00 x 18" tires that came on F-4s. Stu |
5 lug budds
Hello Stu, I recently purchased a 53 F500. I've gone through the brakes and fuel system and am now looking to replace the wheels and tires. If you still have a set of the 19.5s I'm interested. I could make central illinois a day trip as I live next door in southern indiana.
|
Yes, I have a few sets here. I'm in the Springfield area and real close to both I-55 and I-72. My email is in the above post, so I can give you directions. Stu
|
OK thanks I sent you an email.

Looking to buy a set of Budd wheels
Hi. Stu,
I am working on a 1966 Streamline. Travel home RV. It has 2ton Ford running gear under it. I would like to find a set of Alcoa wheels to use, but I understand they have been discontinued by Alcoa. The Alcoa part number is/was 763220 At this point I would use steel wheels so I can get rid of the stock 16.5 load range D tires and wheels. Can you help? Thank you Don Hudson Atascadero, Ca Dhm756@yahoo.com |
Here is a pic from the Alcoa catalog, curtesy Toms' Web Page

Sorry, I sold my set of Alcoa 763220s about a year ago. Today they are on an F-5. Our member harleymsn (Joe) also has a set of the 763220s on his truck, so you might see if he'd have interest in selling them. I'll link below his ad to sell a set of the steel wheels that I believe are now sold. If he wants to hang on to his Alcoas, I do have a set of the steel 19.5" x 6" Budd #89340s if you want to go that direction. Here is the link to Joe's ad. Let me know if it's to be the Budds. Stu

Thanks Stu!
I will PM him on the Alcoas, can you shoot me an email with a pic and price? I'm looking for 7 wheels, I wanna make the rear duals and have a spare. Thanks again! |
Thanks Don. Email sent. Nice motor home, btw. Stu
|
Got it Stu, I will send a PayPal on Monday.
If you ever run across a set of the Alcoas would you keep me in mind, I like shinny stuff. |
Thx Don. I'll save your email and will let you know if a set surfaces. Stu
|
Stu and Don, if in my searches for the elusive Alcoa 22.5's I come across any, I will let you know.
|
I've never seen or heard of any Alcoa 22.5s having the 5 x 8" pattern. I'd suspect that one of the big factory connected companies, like Wheels Now up in the Milwaukee area, could custom drill you a set.
As for the 763220s, I believe the main user of them when new was the FMC motor home company. There's a guy in a small town north of me that says on his sign that he does motor home restoration. He has several FMCs sitting in the small yard near the shop, but none have Alcoas. I've stopped by there but it's been on weekends and nobody was around. I'll wander up that way sometime and see if he has a lead on any. Stu Edit - better yet the guy has a web page (isn't Google great?!). I'd suggest Don give him a call before commiting to a set of the Budds. Email sent too. Stu TOP.htm |
I gave them a call, had to leave a message. The email address on their website comes back as an invalid host.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate the help! |
I still want to get seven 19.5x6 budd wheels that are 5 lug. 89340. We talked about the possibility of having a set in Portland in the future. If there is not something on the horizon for them in Portland is ther a possibility you could strip the tires off a set and ship them to me?
|
Our Oregon source has for now dried up. Our son Michael learned that the brothers running the yard have both left the country. One of their sons is still here, but Michael hasn't been able to connect with him yet. I do still have a few sets here in Illinois if you are willing to ship. A better solution for you might be to investigate this current CL ad. The seller is in Bend, OR. If this isn't your solution please let me know. Stu
Set of six 19.5" X 8.0 load f 12 ply tires on 5 lug rims like new |
Thanks for the tip. I purchased them and made the 14 hour round trip to get them. I still need one more, but its less urgent now.
