Diesel transmission swap

I have a 87 F350 4x4 with a 6,9L and a Borg Warner T19 4 speed. My question is will a T19 from a 460 or engine work behind my Diesel?? I was told that I could only use a T19 that came behind a Diesel, and ones that were behind other engines would not work.

The diesel has a different bolt pattern than the 460. You need a diesel transmission.

It has a separate Bell housing so not worried about the bolt pattern. Thats why they have the adapator plate so Ford bellhousings will bolt to the Navistar engine

You need a 7.3 bell, and the diesel T19 has a taller 1st gear.
Have you looked at ZFs? They aren't a whole lot more than a four speed and are much more driveable.

I have the Bell housing from my 6.9 I just took the tranny out yesterday it lost bearings and had bad syncro. it had 400,000 miles of hard use on it. they want 1600.00 for 5 speed an only 400.00 for the T19

The gas T19 will bolt up to your bell. BUT, check the input shaft length and diameter, and check the output shaft spline.

As per the prior posts, the gas model has different ratios, but 4th remains 1:1. This would be a fairly "mild" nuisance IMO.
